Are You New or Returning to Alberta?

We can register new and returning Alberta residents for their Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan (AHCIP) coverage. This is required prior to receiving insured hospital and physician services.

It is important to keep your AHCIP card up to date and carry it with you at all times, as it is your proof of eligibility for Alberta Health Care.

To register for Alberta Health Care and obtain an Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan (AHCIP) card, you will need to follow these steps:

  • Determine your eligibility: To be eligible for Alberta Health Care, you must be a resident of Alberta and legally entitled to be in Canada.
  • Gather required documents: You will need to provide proof of your identity, residency, and legal entitlement to be in Canada. This may include your passport, birth certificate, immigration documents, and a utility bill or lease agreement to prove your residency.
  • Complete an application form: You can download the AHCIP application form, or obtain a paper copy from our office. You will need to provide personal information, such as your name, date of birth, and contact information, as well as information about any dependents you may have.
  • Submit your application: Once your application form has been completed we will process your application on your behalf.
  • Wait for your AHCIP card: After your application has been processed and approved, you will receive your AHCIP card in the mail. Your AHCIP card is your proof of eligibility for Alberta Health Care, and you should carry it with you at all times.

How Do I Replace my Alberta Health Care Card?

Replacement Alberta Health Care (AHCIP) cards can be requested in our office.

To obtain a replacement, you will need to provide proof of your identity. This may include a valid government-issued photo ID, such as a driver's license or passport.

Replacement cards will be sent out by mail directly from Alberta Health Services.

What are the Eligibility Requirements for an Alberta Health Care Card?

To be eligible for an Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan (AHCIP) card, you must meet the following eligibility requirements:

  • Residency: You must be a resident of Alberta and legally entitled to be in Canada. You must also be physically present in Alberta for at least 183 days in any 12-month period.
  • Legal entitlement: You must be legally entitled to be in Canada, either as a Canadian citizen, a permanent resident, or a temporary resident with a valid work or study permit.
  • Coverage period: If arriving from within Canada, your coverage under the AHCIP will begin on the first day of the third month after you establish residency in Alberta. For example, if you arrive in Alberta on March 15th, your coverage would begin on June 1st. If arriving from outside Canada, your coverage under AHCIP will begin the first day in Alberta or the date assigned on your immigration documents.
  • Provision of personal information: You must provide accurate and complete personal information, including your name, date of birth, contact information, and any information about your dependents who are also applying for coverage.

It is important to note that even if you meet these eligibility requirements, there may be some health services that are not covered under the AHCIP. For example, prescription medications, dental care, and certain types of therapy may require additional insurance or out-of-pocket payment.
