General Information
To be able to take the road test, you must meet the eligibility criteria as outlined. Please carefully read through the information on this site, and terms & conditions you agree to when you pay for your appointment! If you have questions, please contact our office. There are two options to book your road exam
- Book online - Check Availability.
- Book in person - Visit our office.
Rental available for class 4, 5B, 5A Tests
- For class 5 basic tests (5B), the cost is $73.50 Incl GST.
- For class 4 and class 5 advanced (5A), the cost is $95.45 Incl GST.
COVID-19 Requirements
- You must provide a mask, hand sanitizer and disinfecting wipes or spray. The Chief Medical Officer recommends that the mask not be homemade or cloth.
- At the time of the test you must pass COVID-19 screening questions.
- You will be asked to sign a COVID-19 liability waiver.
- The Driver Examiner can end the road test at any time if they feel that their health or safety is at risk.
Eligibility Requirements
- You must arrive to your appointment 30 minutes prior to your road test appointment. Please check in with a registry clerk who will verify your eligibility to take the road test. Failure to arrive ahead of your scheduled appointment time may result in your appointment being cancelled with no refund.
- You must produce a valid Alberta Learner's or Driver's Licence - you may provide a temporary licence with an addition piece of government issued photo identification like a passport, permanent resident card or Nexus card.
- You must meet the minimum age requirements and all requirements for the licence class you are being tested for (see class specific info).
- If you are under 18 years old consent from a parent or guardian is required.
- All outstanding fines on your motor vehicle file must be paid ahead of your road test or the road test will not proceed and no refund will be issued.
- If you are reinstating your licence please call the registry where you are taking your test prior to booking your test to confirm your eligibility.
- You must meet the minimum age requirements and all requirements for the licence class you are being tested for:
Vehicle/Equipment Requirements
- A rental vehicle is available to rent for your test
- No passengers, pets, food, drinks, smoking, use of mobile device, personal grooming or other distractions are allowed during the road test.
- If you provide a rental vehicle, you must provide a copy of the contract with your name on it.
- Car-sharing company vehicles cannot be used to conduct road tests due to user contracts.
- You must provide a mechanically sound vehicle with original certificate of registration and insurance pink card. The vehicle must have enough fuel for the test, functioning headlights, brake lights, signal lights, horn, speedometer, brakes, seatbelts, vehicle controls, windshield wipers and exhaust system; unobstructed windshields and mirrors with all windows free of tint; tires in good condition; and the vehicle must have a clean uncluttered passenger seat for the examiner (except for motorcycle road tests). A driver examiner may cancel the test at any time if they feel unsafe.
Cancellations, re-booking and no-show policy
- If you are late to your appointment or fail to show up, you will not receive a refund. You will be responsible for rescheduling and paying for a new road test.
- If you need to reschedule your road test you must do it prior to 24 hours before your scheduled appointment with no additional fees.
- Re-booking is only allowed for up to one year from the originally scheduled appointment date.
- If you do not meet eligibility requirements, do not have required documentation or if the vehicle you provide for your road test is deemed unsafe you are not eligible for a refund. Road test fees are non-transferable and non-refundable.
- If you are unsure whether you meet the requirements, please call us at (780) 483-8211.
- Driver Examiners may cancel a road test on short notice or onsite due to poor weather conditions as determined by the driver examiner. If your exam is cancelled due to poor or unsafe weather conditions you will be able to reschedule the test at no additional fee.
- Driver examiners can cancel the road test if they feel that you are unsafe to drive due to a physical or cognitive impairment or suspect that you are impaired by alcohol or drugs, if a test is cancelled for these reasons, you will not receive a refund.
- If the Registry Agent is unable to provide a road test for a booked appointment, you will receive a refund.
Class 5 Basic Testing Information
General Information
- 30 – 45 minute appointment with pre-test instruction / sanitization and summary (6 - 10 kms in length).
- Must hold Class 7 licence for one full year or, if eligible through GDL Exemption.
- Must be 16 years of age or older. Minors must obtain parental / legal guardian consent to complete road test and operator licence reclass.
- Once passed and validated, the permit is valid for 1 year.
- You will be able to operate a vehicle subject to the GDL Rules.
Eligibility Requirements
- Have had a Class 7 learner's licence with at least one year of driving experience.
- Be at least 16 years old.
- If you're under 18, you must have written consent from a parent or guardian.
- Be a Canadian citizen, a Canadian permanent resident, hold a valid work or student visa, and/or have an approved refugee claim from the Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada.
- Have proof that you live in Alberta.
- Have valid ID.

Completing the Road Examination

The Road Exam may consist of:
- Making numerous right and left turns and handling right and left road curves.
- Handling ‘through’ intersections and handling controlled and uncontrolled intersections.
- Stopping at pedestrian crosswalks and changing lanes.
- Entering and exiting high-speed roadways and driving in various speed zones.
- Driving in moderate and congested traffic.
- Controlled and uncontrolled railway crossings and driving through playground and school zones.
- Angle parking and hazard preparation exercises.
Reclass Your Licence
- Cost is $28.00.
- Surrender valid existing licence.
- Will require your current road test permit.
Class 5 Advanced Testing Information
General Information
- 60 minute appointment with pre-test instruction / sanitization and summary (20 - 30 kms in length).
- Must have spent a min. of 2 years as a GDL probationary driver or, if eligible through GDL Exemption.
- Must be 18 years of age or older.
- Be suspension and cancellation free for the last year of their probationary stage.
- Once passed and validated, the permit is valid for 1 year.
- You will reclass licence to Class 5 non-GDL licence.
- Fully licensed drivers are no longer subject to any of the driving conditions and restrictions associated with GDL licensing. Drivers who obtain a full Class 5 licence are also then eligible to upgrade their licenses to commercial classes and can supervise Class 7 (Learner) drivers.
Eligibility Requirements
- Be at least 18 years old.
- Drive for at least 2 years as a Class 5-GDL driver.
- Have no licence suspensions during the last 12 months of the Class 5-GDL licence stage.
- Be a Canadian citizen, a Canadian permanent resident, hold a valid work visa, and/or have an approved refugee claim from the Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada.
- Have proof that you live in Alberta.
- Have valid ID.

Class 6 Testing Information
General Information
- 45 – 60 minute appointment with pre-test instruction / sanitization and summary (20 - 30 kms in length).
- Must hold Class 7 licence for one full year or, if eligible through GDL Exemption.
- Test is completed using cell phone communication with the Examiner – you must have headphones with a microphone.
- Once passed and validated, the permit is valid for 1 year.
Eligibility
- Be at least 16 years old.
- Drive for at least 2 years as a Class 6-GDL driver.
- Have a minimum a Class 7 learner's licence for at least a year.
- If you're under 18, you must have written consent from a parent or guardian.
- Be a Canadian citizen, a Canadian permanent resident, hold a valid work or student visa, and/or have an approved refugee claim from the Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada.
- Have proof that you live in Alberta.
- Have valid ID.
Knowledge Test
- Cost is $17.00 per exam (GST Included).

No appointment necessary provided test begins no less than 45 minutes before close. Testing hours are:
- Monday - Friday 8:00am - 5:15pm
- Thursdays 8:00am - 7:15pm
- Saturdays 9:00am - 3:15pm
- Correctly score 25 out of 30 multiple-choice, computerized questions.
- One exam per day.
- Once passed and validated, the permit is valid for 1 year.

Class 4 Professional Testing Information
General Information
- 45 – 60 minute appointment with pre-test instruction / sanitization and summary (20 - 30 kms in length).
- Once passed and validated, the permit is valid for 1 year.
Eligibility Criteria: for Class 4 Commercial Licence for Taxi, Ambulance, Bus (that seats under 24 passengers)
- Be at least 18 years old.
- Hold a valid full, non-GDL Class 5 licence at minimum.
- Pass Class 4 knowledge test.
- Vision assessment form (can be completed at registry office).
- Completed medical report from a doctor or nurse practitioner.
- Have proof that you live in Alberta.
- Have valid ID.
- An air brake "Q" endorsement is required to operate air brake equipped vehicles. If the vehicle provided for the road test is equipped with air brakes, you must have either an air brake "Q" endorsement or a course completion certificate from an approved air brake organization.
Knowledge Test
- Cost is $17.00 per exam (GST Included).

- Once completed, the medical is valid for 6 months.
- Medical needs to be completed prior to commencing road examination.
