What is an Alberta trade name?
A trade name, also known as a business name, is the name under which a business operates that differs from the owner’s legal name. It is used by sole proprietorships, and by corporations conducting business under a name other than their registered corporate name. Registering it puts the name on the public record with Alberta Corporate Registry, which banks and suppliers usually ask for before opening an account.
Two or more people running a business together register a partnership instead.
What you will need
- The trade name, what the business does, where in Alberta it operates and when it started.
- The declarant’s details: name, occupation and address for an individual, or the corporation name and corporate access number.
- A photo of your driver’s licence or passport.
- Optional: a NUANS name search report. Bring your own, or add one to the order for $36.75.
Registration pricing starts at $70.00 including the government fee and GST. We prepare the declaration, send you a pre-registration confirmation to approve, then file it, usually the same business day.
